How Long Will My Botox Results Last?

Most everyone has heard of BOTOX® Cosmetic. People use the name to refer to any neuromodulator much the way they use Kleenex® to refer to any facial tissue. Botox is a safe and effective way to reduce wrinkles.
At Oral & Facial Surgery of Mississippi, Botox injections are one of our most popular cosmetic procedures because patients are familiar with the brand, and it works well. If you don’t like how you look with wrinkles, Dr. Michael Nichols and our team can help.
But, even though you’re likely familiar with the brand, you may still have questions. One of the most common we get is how long results last. The answer might, for example, help you plan your skin care routine to ensure you look your best for a big event.
Unfortunately, we can’t give a simple answer — but we can offer some information.
How Botox works
As a neuromodulator, Botox and similar injections work by disrupting (modulating) the nerve (neuro) signals to the muscles that contract and cause your wrinkles.
For example, if you have horizontal lines on your forehead, raising your eyebrows and contracting the muscles just beneath your skin can cause the lines to become more prominent and noticeable.
With Botox, you can still raise your eyebrows, but the muscles in your forehead won’t contract, and the wrinkles won’t be as noticeable.
Skill and expertise matter
When it comes to getting a neuromodulator injected into your face, the skill and expertise of the person inserting the needle matter a great deal. You want your provider to prevent the right muscle from contracting while the others remain perfectly responsive.
Dr. Nichols holds dental and medical degrees and has completed internships in general surgery and maxillofacial surgery. In other words, when it comes to the face, he’s an expert.
Your first injection
When you get your first Botox injection at Oral & Facial Surgery of Mississippi, you may feel a bit nervous. However, you might be surprised by how simple, painless, and fast it is. You can also see the results immediately.
For most people, those early injections last for six months or so. Some people may need another injection in 4-5 months, and some may not require one for 6-7 months.
Botox over time
You may not need injections every six months forever to maintain your results. Researchers have found that repeated injections can lead the targeted muscle to weaken, meaning your results last longer.
