CO2 Lasers: Innovations in Skin Rejuvenation & Beyond

CO2 Lasers: Innovations in Skin Rejuvenation & Beyond

Carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers have been used in medical settings for decades. Today, CO2 lasers have a variety of uses, from surgeries to skin resurfacing.

Dr. Michael Nichols and the team at Oral & Facial Surgery of Mississippi in Flowood, Mississippi, offer fractional CO2 laser resurfacing to patients who’d like to replace sun damage, scarring, and wrinkles with fresh, vibrant, and youthful-looking skin.

In this post, we describe some issues that laser skin resurfacing can correct, plus what you can expect during and after your procedure.

Why laser resurfacing works

The CO2 fractional laser uses concentrated beams of energy to damage select areas of your skin. This precise, controlled damage removes thick scar tissue and stimulates your body’s healing processes, producing collagen and elastin.

The result is fewer wrinkles, a more consistent tone, less visible scarring, and smoother skin. Because the laser is so precise, you heal more quickly than with other laser treatments, chemical peels, or abrasion.

Conditions addressed

Before your procedure, you meet with Dr. Nichols to ensure you understand what a fractional CO2 laser can and can’t do and ensure you’re an appropriate candidate.

Depending on your treatment goals and skin type, Dr. Nichols may suggest laser resurfacing, a different approach, or a combination of treatments.

One of the most successful uses of CO2 fractional laser treatments is diminishing the appearance of scars. Acne, chickenpox, keratosis, and other conditions can leave scars on your face, but laser resurfacing can effectively treat them.

Other common issues include:

If you’re a good candidate for laser resurfacing, we perform your procedure at our state-of-the-art facility.

During your procedure

Most of the time, we use IV sedation during laser skin resurfacing. That’s to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

Dr. Nichols applies the laser exactly where you need it, leaving other areas undamaged, to promote collagen remodeling where it can have the most impact.

Recovery and results

Immediately after your procedure, your skin may be red and puffy. We provide thorough instructions on how to care for your skin so that it heals properly. Generally, we advise you to avoid makeup for a week and protect yourself from sun exposure.

You may need one or several treatments to reach your goals. Dr. Nichols discusses the number and timing of treatments you might need during your initial consultation.

You should see results from your laser resurfacing within a few days and the full effects in 3-6 months.
