Why You Should Include Microneedling in Your Skin Care Routine

Some wellness and beauty trends come and go and amount to nothing more than fads. Microneedling isn’t one of them. This skin care procedure has endured well past being trendy — because it works.

Dr. Michael Nichols and the staff here at Oral & Facial Surgery of Mississippi offer skin care and cosmetic services because we know that feeling great about your appearance is part of overall good health. Defy Facial Spa is a full facial spa located within our practice, and Lee Anne Watson is a licensed aesthetician providing services to help you look younger while keeping your skin healthy and beautiful.

Microneedling should be part of your routine if you want fewer lines and wrinkles, fresher, more elastic skin, and care tailored to your skin.

What’s microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure that stimulates your body’s healing abilities by inflicting tiny wounds. We use a tool called SkinPen® to revitalize any area you’d like.

When Dr. Nichols places the device on your skin, it creates micro-punctures, or microscopic tears. The controlled skin damage stimulates your body’s healing response.

Does microneedling hurt?

We use a numbing agent before your treatment so you remain comfortable. Afterward, your skin may be slightly tender and red, and you may experience some swelling. You might need to take over-the-counter pain medication, but the discomfort typically fades quickly.

Be careful about sun exposure after your treatment; don’t plan to spend a day on the lake immediately following microneedling.

How does microneedling work?

The healing response that microneedling triggers includes increased collagen and elastin production and the creation of new skin cells. That means you enjoy plumper skin, less visible fine lines, and a refreshed look.

To boost your natural response to the microtears, Dr. Nichols may recommend specific serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. The tears allow the serums or PRP to penetrate deeply into your skin, where they can work more effectively.

What does microneedling treat?

In addition to fine lines and wrinkles, microneedling can help with many other skin issues, including:

The list of uses continues to expand. Microneedling can even help treat hair loss due to alopecia.

How often should you have microneedling?

Dr. Nichols tailors your treatment to your needs, one of the advantages of getting care from an expert. If he recommends it, microneedling can be safely performed several times a year.

During your consultation, Dr. Nichols suggests a plan to address your skin care needs, and it may include microneedling every few weeks, then as a maintenance procedure. Or he may suggest you come in for treatment on a regular schedule.
